Choose the Right Skip Size
Different jobs need different skip sizes. A small bathroom refit will not need the same skip as a full house clearance or commercial project. Use the guide below as a starting point, then check live availability before booking.
What size skip do I need?
A 4-yard skip is usually best for small DIY, garden and household jobs. An 8-yard builder’s skip is the common choice for renovation and construction waste. A 12-yard skip is better for large bulky clearances, but heavy waste such as soil, rubble, bricks and concrete may require a smaller skip because of weight limits.
4 Yard Skip
Best for small DIY and garden clearances.
6 Yard Skip
Better for heavy waste bathroom refits.
8 Yard Skip
Common builders skip. Large renovation work.
10 Yard Skip
Best for bulky but lighter house clearances.
12 Yard Skip
Best for large bulky waste.
Note: For heavy waste such as soil, rubble, hardcore, or bricks, speak to the team before booking. Larger skips (10 yd+) are not suitable for heavy waste because weight restrictions may apply.

HIGHWAY REGULATIONS
Does a 4 Yard Skip Need a Permit?
A permit is not normally needed on suitable private land. If the skip will be placed on a public road, contact our team so we can check the council requirements and arrange the application.
This usually includes a suitable driveway, private yard or other hardstanding within the property boundary. Safe vehicle access and a suitable surface are still required.
- No council road-permit application is normally needed.
- The surface and delivery route must still be suitable.
- The skip must remain entirely inside the private boundary.
ON-STREET PLACEMENT
Call Skip Hire Team before booking. We will check the relevant council’s requirements and permit price for the delivery address. Once the details and charges are agreed, our team will submit the permit application.
- Who must submit the permit application.
- Whether lights, cones or reflective markings are required.
- Whether a separate parking-bay suspension is needed.
Local Council Confirmation May Be Required For:
Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs)
A marked bay may require a separate suspension.
Marked Residents’ Bays
Check bay conditions and notice requirements.
Yellow Lines and Restrictions
Road markings or clearway rules may prevent placement.
Narrow Roads and Bus Routes
Safe access and sufficient passing width must remain available.
Private land is normally the simplest place for a skip, provided the surface is suitable and the delivery vehicle can reach it safely.
- Placement area: Use firm, level ground with enough room for the selected skip.
- Vehicle access: Keep the entrance and approach clear for delivery and collection.
- Overhead route: Check for low branches, cables, scaffolding and other obstructions.
Where Can the Skip Be Placed?
- Driveway or Private Yard: A suitable driveway, private yard or firm hardstanding is normally the simplest placement option.
- Entrance and Approach: The delivery vehicle must be able to enter, position the skip and leave safely.
- Turning Space: Check narrow roads, tight corners, gates and restricted reversing space.
- Parked Vehicles: Keep the approach and placement area clear on delivery and collection days.
- Overhead Obstructions: Allow clear space around branches, cables, scaffolding and structures.
- Surface Condition: Avoid soft ground, weak surfaces and newly laid or decorative paving where possible.
- Drains and Property: Do not position the skip over fragile drains, inspection covers or close to walls and gates.
- Collection Access: The same safe route must remain available when the loaded skip is collected.
Important: The driver will make the final placement decision after checking access and site safety. An alternative position may be required if the requested area is unsuitable.
