Compare and Choose the Right Skip Size

Choosing the right skip depends on your waste type, available space, and the size of your project. For heavy waste, a 4-yard or 6-yard skip is usually the safest choice. An 8-yard skip may be suitable in some cases, but it should not be filled entirely with dense material unless agreed in advance. Use the guide below to compare the most common skip sizes.

Pro Tip

Do not place heavy waste in 10 or 12 yard skips. These larger skips are designed for bulky, lighter materials and may become too heavy to collect safely. If you are unsure whether an item can go in your skip, contact us before booking. This helps avoid extra charges, failed collections or rejected waste.

4 Yard Skip Size

4 Yard Midi Skip

A 4 yard skip, also known as a midi skip, is a compact option for smaller domestic projects. It is a good choice when space is limited or when you only have a modest amount of waste.

Typical use:

  • Small clear-outs
  • Garden waste
  • Bathroom suites
  • Minor home improvements
  • Not ideal for: larger renovations or bulky clearance jobs
  • Size (approx.): 1.83m L × 1.35m W × 0.92m H (6.00ft × 4.43ft × 3.02ft)
  • Volume: approx. 3.06 m³
6 Yard Skip Size

6 Yard Builder Skip

A 6 yard skip is one of the most popular choices for domestic and trade projects. It is often called a builders skip because it works well for heavier waste while still offering good capacity.

Typical use:

  • Kitchen rip-outs
  • Bathroom refits
  • Small extension waste
  • Builder’s waste
  • Not ideal for: very large bulky but lightweight waste loads
  • Dimensions (L x W x H): 3.05m x 1.52m x 1.22m (10ft x 5ft x 4ft)
8 Yard Skip Size

8 Yard Medium Skip

An 8 yard skip is a versatile option for larger domestic clearances, renovation projects, and mixed waste. It gives you more space than a 6 yard skip while still being suitable for many common building and clearance jobs.

Typical use:

  • House clearances
  • Bulky waste
  • Renovation projects
  • Heavier mixed waste
  • Not ideal for: extremely bulky commercial volumes
  • Dimensions (L × W × H): approx. 3.05 m × 1.70 m × 1.20 m
  • Volume: 6.12m³
10 Yard Skip Size

10 Yard Skip

A 10 yard skip is designed for larger volumes of bulky, lighter waste. It is commonly used for larger domestic clearances, office clear-outs, shop refits and trade waste.

  • Larger clear-outs
  • Office waste
  • Shop refits
  • Bulky domestic waste
  • Not ideal for: very heavy waste like dense rubble or soil
  • Volume: 7.65m³
  • Dimensions (L × W × H): approx. 3.05 m × 1.80 m × 1.20 m
12 Yard Skip Size

12 Yard Skip Hire

A 12 yard skip gives you high capacity for large volumes of lighter waste. It is often used for major domestic clear-outs, office waste, commercial waste and larger site jobs.

  • Larger clear-outs
  • Commercial waste
  • Site jobs
  • Bulky light material
  • Not ideal for: dense, heavy waste that could exceed weight limit
  • Volume: 9.18m
  • Size (approx.): 12 feet, 5.9 feet, 5 feet
20 YARD SKIP
40 YARD SKIP

20 and 40 Yard RoRo Skip

For large commercial, construction, industrial or demolition projects, a standard skip may not provide enough capacity. In these cases, a roll-on roll-off skip, often called a RORO skip, is usually more suitable.

Typical use:

  • Construction waste
  • Demolition
  • Commercial clearances
  • Large site work

Do I Need a Skip Permit?

A skip permit is required only while placing it on a public road, pavement, or highway. No required if placed on a driveway or private site.

Permit rules and costs vary by council. Most permits last around 7 to 14 days and typically take 3 to 5 working days to arrange. If you choose public highway placement during checkout, the permit fee will be added where applicable and we can arrange the permit for you.

Always check before booking if your placement area has parking restrictions, narrow access, low trees, overhead cables or controlled parking.

Which Skip Size Do I Need?

Recommendation: A 4 Yard Midi Skip is usually perfect for a standard bathroom suite (bath, toilet, sink) plus tiles and packaging.

Recommendation: You must use a 6 Yard Skip. Do not order anything larger (8-yard+), as the truck cannot legally lift larger skips filled with heavy rubble.

Recommendation: Go for a 10 yard skip and 12 Yard Skip. House clearances produce a lot of “light bulk” (boxes, clothes, furniture) that takes up volume quickly.

Recommendation: An 8 Yard Skip is best. Furniture shapes are awkward and create empty spaces, so you need the extra volume.

Common Questions About Skip Hire

Our FAQ section covers everything you need to know, from permit requirements to skip sizes and waste types.

Skip hire costs depend on the skip size, your postcode, the waste type, permit requirements, and how long you need the skip for. Our recent booking data shows the average cost ranges from £220 to £455 (inc VAT) for standard 4- to 12-yard skips. For 20 and 40-yard RORO skips get prices over the phone.,

Yes. Use our online skip cost calculator to compare live skip hire prices, available skip sizes, and delivery slots near you.

You need a permit if the skip is placed on a public road, pavement or highway. You usually do not need a permit if the skip is placed fully on private land.

A 6 yard skip is usually the best choice for builder’s waste because it can handle heavier materials better than larger skips. For some mixed renovation jobs, an 8 yard skip may also be suitable.

Standard hire is usually up to 14 days. Extensions available at an extra £30 daily charge, subject to availability.

Same-day or next-day skip hire may be available in some areas when you order early. Availability depends on your postcode, skip size and local delivery schedules.

A 4 yard skip is often enough for a standard bathroom refit. If you have heavier materials, tiles, rubble or extra waste, a 6 yard skip may be better.

Yes, but soil, rubble, bricks and concrete are heavy. These materials are usually best placed in a 4 or 6 yard skip. Do not fill a 10 or 12 yard skip with heavy waste.

Some upholstered furniture may need special handling because of waste regulations. Tell us before booking if you need to dispose of a sofa, armchair or upholstered seating.
