8 Yard Skip Hire – Ideal for Medium-Sized Projects

The 8 yard skip is the classic builder’s skip. It’s built for heavy waste like bricks, rubble, hardcore and soil, and is ideal when you’re doing structural work, knocking down walls or ripping out a large bathroom or kitchen.

Is an 8 yard skip right for you?

The 8-yard is the classic “builders’ skip”, specially designed for heavier materials, such as bricks, rubble, hardcore, and soil.

Choose an 8 yard skip if you’re dealing with:

  • Bricks and masonry from wall removal or structural work
  • Tiles, concrete and hardcore from refits and renovations
  • Soil and sub-base from landscaping or driveway projects
  • Heavy bathroom or kitchen rip-outs
  • Larger DIY or refurbishment jobs where a 6 yard skip won’t be enough

“Skip hire prices vary depending on several factors: Location, Rental Duration, Skip Size, Waste Type, Permits and Licenses, Delivery and Collection.”

Weight limits & safe loading

8 yard skips are designed for heavy waste, but there is still a maximum safe lift weight. To avoid problems at collection:

  • Do not heap waste above the top edge. Overfilled skips cannot be lifted.
  • Keep heavy material (bricks, hardcore, soil) below the top edge and spread evenly.
  • Avoid filling the skip to full height with pure wet soil or concrete – it can become too heavy for legal lifting and may need partially off-loading on site.

Placement & Access

An 8 yard skip is bigger, so safe access matters:

  • Enough driveway space for the skip itself
  • Room for the lorry to reverse and lift safely
  • Solid, level ground (not soft lawn or very loose gravel)
  • Clear of overhead cables, branches or low balconies
  • What Can Go?
  • What Can’t Go?
  • Permits
  • Delivery Window

A 8 yard skip is ideal for:

  • General household junk like old boxes, toys, clothes, and light furniture
  • Light DIY waste like tiles and wood offcuts
  • Garden waste (branches, soil in sensible amounts, hedge trimmings, turf)

It’s a good size for bathroom rip-outs, small kitchen refreshes, end-of-tenancy clean-ups and clearing one room at a time.

Some items can’t legally go in a general skip:

  • Fridges / freezers
  • Gas bottles and cylinders
  • Tyres
  • Paint, chemicals, solvents
  • Asbestos or suspected asbestos
  • Batteries and electrical hazardous waste

Bulky items like mattresses or upholstered furniture may be allowed, but may carry an extra surcharge. Ask before loading so you’re not charged later.

If your skip is placed on your private drive, permit is not required.

If it needs to sit on a public road or pavement, your local council will normally require a skip permit. Permit costs and lead times vary by council, but they typically:

  • Add an extra fee to your booking. On average, the cost ranges from £30 to £50, while a 14-day permit costs around £95 or more.
  • Take a 3 to 5 working days to arrange
  • Set rules on lights, cones and how long the skip can remain on the road

Let us know where you plan to place the skip when you book. We’ll advise whether a permit is required in your Medway or Kent postcode and help make sure everything is legal and compliant.

We work with local depots to offer convenient delivery and collection:

  • Delivery: choose a day that suits you at checkout; same-day or next-day may be available in some Medway and Kent areas, especially when you book before 10:00 AM
  • Hire period: standard hire is up to 14 days for most postcodes
  • Collection: once you’re finished, request collection and the depot will remove the skip as soon as possible within the agreed timeframe

If you think you’ll need the skip for longer, ask our team about extending your hire; extra days are usually available for an additional charge.

Yes. An 8 yard builders skip is specifically designed for heavy materials such as bricks, rubble, concrete, tiles and soil. But load it sensibly and keep waste below the top edge.

An 8 yard skip will fit on many driveways, but you’ll need enough length and width for the skip, plus space for the lorry to reverse and lower it safely.
