How Much Does Skip Hire Cost Near You?

When comparing skip hire prices, it helps to think beyond the skip size alone.  Prices usually depend on the size you choose, location, waste type, permit requirements, and hire duration.

Our recent booking data shows the average skip hire cost ranges from £220 to £455 (inc VAT) for standard 4- to 12-yard skips. For larger commercial jobs, 20 and 40-yard RORO skips are quoted separately based on haulage, tonnage, and collection frequency.

A 6-yard skip for heavy waste can sometimes be a better value than a larger skip if the material is dense. In the same way, a 10- or 12-yard skip may be more cost-effective for bulky light waste, even if the headline price is higher.

Before You Book

4 Yard Skip Size

4 Yard Skip Hire: Midi Skip for Small Projects

A 4-yard skip is one of the best options for small skip hire, including light home clear-outs, small bathroom or kitchen projects, and garden waste. It is often chosen where driveway space is limited, and the waste volume is relatively low.

  • Best for: small domestic jobs, garden waste, light DIY, tight spaces
  • Typical load: 30–40 bin bags
  • Good choice if you need: a compact skip for a smaller amount of waste
  • Not ideal for: larger renovations or bulky clearance jobs
  • Size (approx.): 1.83m L × 1.35m W × 0.92m H (6.00ft × 4.43ft × 3.02ft)
  • Volume: approx. 3.06 m³
  • Standard hire: up to 14 days, with extensions available from £30 per extra day.
6 Yard Skip Size

6 Yard Skip Hire: The Builder’s Favourite

A 6 yard skip is a popular choice for medium-sized projects and heavier mixed waste. It is often used for bathroom refits, kitchen renovations, home improvements, and builder’s waste where a smaller skip may not be enough.

  • Best for: builder’s waste, kitchen and bathroom refits, mixed heavy waste
  • Good choice if you need: a practical all-round skip for domestic or trade work
  • Not ideal for: very large bulky but lightweight waste loads
  • Typical load: 50–60 bin bags
  • Dimensions (L x W x H): 3.05m x 1.52m x 1.22m (10ft x 5ft x 4ft)
  • Standard hire length: Up to 14 days included. Extensions available at £30/day
8 Yard Skip Size

8 Yard Medium Skip Hire: Great for Bulky Waste

An 8 yard skip is often seen as one of the most versatile options for bigger projects. It works well for larger clear-outs, renovation work, and mixed waste where more capacity is needed without jumping to a bulky light-waste skip.

  • Best for: larger renovations, builder’s waste, heavier mixed waste, clear-outs
  • Good choice if you need: extra capacity for a bigger project
  • Typical load: 70–80 bin bags
  • Not ideal for: extremely bulky commercial volumes
  • Dimensions (L × W × H): approx. 3.05 m × 1.70 m × 1.20 m
  • Volume: 6.12m³
  • Standard hire length: up to 14 days included and extensions available from £30/ day.
10 Yard Skip Size

10 Yard Commercial Skip Hire: For Major Clearances

A 10 yard skip gives you more space for bulky, lighter waste and is often chosen for larger home, trade, or office clear-outs. It is useful where volume matters more than weight.

  • Best for: bulky light waste, shop refits, office clear-outs, larger domestic jobs
  • Good choice if you need: more volume without moving to a RORO skip
  • Not ideal for: very heavy waste like dense rubble or soil
  • Typical load: 80–100 bin bags
  • Volume: 7.65m³
  • Dimensions (L × W × H): approx. 3.05 m × 1.80 m × 1.20 m
  • Standard hire length: Up to 14 days included. Extensions available at £30 per extra day
12 Yard Skip Size

12 Yard Commercial Skip Hire: High Capacity for Light Waste

A 12 yard skip is designed for larger loads of lighter waste and is commonly used on bigger domestic, trade, and commercial jobs. It is a strong option when you need more capacity for non-heavy materials.

  • Best for: large clear-outs, bulky light waste, commercial waste, larger site jobs
  • Good choice if you need: maximum volume before stepping up to RORO
  • Not ideal for: dense, heavy waste that could exceed weight limits
  • Typical load: 100–120 bin bags
  • Volume: 9.18m³
  • Size (approx.): 12 feet, 5.9 feet, 5 feet
20 YARD SKIP
40 YARD SKIP

20 and 40 Yard RoRo Skip: For Builders & Businesses

If you need commercial skip hire for a major site clearance, demolition project, or bulk waste job, 20 yard and 40 yard RORO skips are usually the right option. These are larger roll-on roll-off containers used for heavier and higher-volume waste streams.

  • Best for: commercial sites, demolition, bulk waste, large construction projects
  • Good choice if you need: high-capacity waste removal for large-scale work
  • Typical load: 200 bin bags (20-yd), 400 bin bags (40-yd)

Do I need a permit for a skip?

If your skip is placed on a public road or pavement, a council permit is required.  We can arrange the permit for you. Most permits last 7–14 days and cost around £55–£90 and take 3 to 5 working days.

If you choose Public Highway, we’ll automatically add the council permit fee to your total and arrange it for you.

Permit Notes
Rules vary by council, but the general rule is simple: if any part of the skip sits on the public highway (road/pavement), a permit is required.

Which Skip Size Do I Need?

Recommendation: A 4 Yard Midi Skip is usually perfect for a standard bathroom suite (bath, toilet, sink) plus tiles and packaging.

Recommendation: You must use a 6 Yard Skip. Do not order anything larger (8-yard+), as the truck cannot legally lift larger skips filled with heavy rubble.

Recommendation: Go for a 10 yard skip and 12 Yard Skip. House clearances produce a lot of “light bulk” (boxes, clothes, furniture) that takes up volume quickly.

Recommendation: An 8 Yard Skip is best. Furniture shapes are awkward and create empty spaces, so you need the extra volume.

Common Questions About Skip Hire

Our FAQ section covers everything you need to know, from permit requirements to skip sizes and waste types.

Skip hire costs depend on the skip size, your postcode, the waste type, permit requirements, and how long you need the skip for. Our recent booking data shows the average cost ranges from £220 to £455 (inc VAT) for standard 4- to 12-yard skips. For 20 and 40-yard RORO skips get prices over the phone.,

Yes. Use our online skip cost calculator to compare live skip hire prices, available skip sizes, and delivery slots near you.

For many builder’s waste jobs, 6 and 8 yard skips are the most practical choices because they balance capacity and weight better than larger bulky-waste skips.

Both are larger skips for bulky lighter waste, but a 12 yard skip gives you more capacity and is often better for larger domestic or commercial clear-outs.

RORO skip hire is best for larger commercial, demolition, and site jobs where 20 or 40 yard capacity is needed.

No, heavy waste such as soil, bricks, and rubble should not go in 10-yard skips. These materials are best placed in 4 yard skip and 6 yard skips to avoid overloading. Larger skips are better suited for lighter bulky waste.

For a small flat or 1–2 rooms, a 4–6 yard skip is normally enough. For a full house clearance or larger renovation, an 8–12 yard skip is more suitable.
