How Skip Hire Works

Hiring a skip should be simple. The basic process is:

Choose the right skip size

Start by matching the skip size to your waste type, available space and project size.

Check access and placement

Decide whether the skip will go on private land, a driveway or a public road. Road placements may need a permit.

Arrange delivery and collection

Book your delivery date, fill the skip safely and arrange collection when you are finished.

Compare Skip Sizes Before You Book

Choosing the right skip depends on the type of waste, how much space you have and whether the skip will hold heavy or bulky material. Larger skips are not always suitable for heavy waste, especially soil, rubble, bricks and concrete.

Pro Tip

Do not place heavy waste in 10 or 12 yard skips. These larger skips are designed for bulky, lighter materials and may become too heavy to collect safely. If you are unsure whether an item can go in your skip, contact us before booking. This helps avoid extra charges, failed collections or rejected waste.

Which Skip Size Do I Need?

A 4 yard skip is often enough for a standard bathroom refit, especially where tiles, packaging and old fittings are involved. If you have heavier rubble or extra waste, a 6 yard skip may be more suitable.

A 6 yard skip is a common choice for builders’ waste because it can usually handle heavier materials better than larger skips.

An 8 yard skip is often used for bigger renovation jobs, mixed builders’ waste and bulky household clearances.

A 10 yard skip or 12 yard skip may suit bulky, lighter waste such as furniture, packaging and general household clearance waste. Do not use these larger skips for heavy loads of soil, rubble or concrete.

What Can and Can’t Go in a Skip?

Skips can be used for many common waste types, including household rubbish, garden waste, wood, soil, rubble, bricks, tiles, packaging, furniture and renovation waste.

Some items need special handling or cannot go in a standard skip. These may include fridges, freezers, tyres, mattresses, asbestos, chemicals, gas bottles, batteries, paint, electrical items and hazardous waste.

Tell the team before booking if you have any restricted or unusual waste. This helps avoid failed collections, extra charges or rejected loads.

Common Questions About Skip Hire

Our FAQ section covers everything you need to know, from permit requirements to skip sizes and waste types.

Skip hire is a waste removal service where a skip is delivered to your property or site, filled with suitable waste, then collected and taken for licensed waste handling.

For small clearances, a 4 yard skip may be enough. For builders’ waste, 6 yard and 8 yard skips are common choices. For bulky lighter waste, 10 yard and 12 yard skips may be suitable.

You need a permit if the skip is placed on a public road, pavement or highway. You usually do not need a permit if the skip is placed fully on private land.

Standard hire is usually up to 14 days. Extensions available at an extra £30 daily charge, subject to availability.

Same-day or next-day skip hire may be available in some areas when you order early. Availability depends on your postcode, skip size and local delivery schedules.

Some upholstered furniture may need special handling because of waste regulations. Tell us before booking if you need to dispose of a sofa, armchair or upholstered seating.
