Quick Skip Comparison Table

Skips are measured in cubic yards. You can easily calculate it yourself:

Cubic Yards = (Length in feet × Width in feet × Height in feet) ÷ 27

1 yd = 3 ft , so 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet yd=3 ft,so 3×3×3=27 cubic feet

Domestic, Commercial & Industrial Skips

Skip Sizes: Detailed Guide & Uses

We offer skips for all sizes, ranging from small 4-yard skips to 40-yard RoRo containers. Rent a skip for house clear-outs, garden waste, DIY projects or builder’s rubble. Select your size, choose a time slot, and pay securely.

Cross-check the access & placement checklist before booking to avoid failed deliveries:

Minimum access width: 3 metres clear space, Overhead clearance: 4–6 metres for truck arm, Ground surface: Firm and level,  protect soft tarmac in hot weather and Hazards: Notify us about narrow roads, tight turns, or low trees

4 Yard Skip Size

4 Yard Skip – Midi Skip for Small Projects

The 4-yard skip is the standard choice for small residential projects where driveway space is tight. It fits comfortably in a single car parking space.

  • Best For: Bathroom renovations, garden soil/turf removal, or small DIY projects.
  • Typical load: 30–40 bin bags
  • Avoid if: You have large, bulky furniture (sofas/mattresses), as these will consume most of the space immediately.
  • Nearest alternatives: Too small → 6-yard; Light bulky waste → 8-yard
  • Notes: Compact; fits most driveways
6 Yard Skip Size

6 Yard Skip – The Builder’s Favourite

The most popular skip size in the UK. This is the designated limit for heavy waste (like soil, bricks, and concrete) because larger skips become too heavy for trucks to lift safely.

  • Best For: Full kitchen renovations, driveway replacements, and medium house clearances.
  • Typical load: 50–60 bin bags
When not to choose: Very bulky, mostly light items in big pieces
  • Nearest alternatives: Too small → 8-yard (light waste); Mostly rubble → 4-yard
  • Pro Tip: Offers the best “price per cubic yard” for domestic heavy waste.
8 Yard Skip Size

8 Yard Skip – Great for Bulky Waste

The classic “Builders Skip.” This is the largest size allowed for heavy/dense waste mixed with general waste.

  • Best For: Bulky waste like sofas, wardrobes, and full room clearances.
  • Typical load: 60–80 bin bags
  • When not to choose: Pure heavy waste (soil/hardcore)
  • Nearest alternatives: Need more volume for light waste → 10- or 12-yard
  • Notes: Balance of volume and footprint
10 Yard Skip Size

10 Yard Skip – For Major Clearances

When you need volume, not weight.

  • Best for: House clearouts, packaging, wood, plastics
  • Typical load: 80–100 bin bags
  • When not to choose: Mainly soil or hardcore
  • Nearest alternatives: More light bulk → 12-yard; Unsure → compare 8 vs 10
  • Strict Rule: No soil, bricks, or concrete. These materials are too dense for skips of this size.
12 Yard Skip Size

12 Yard Skip – High Capacity for Light Waste

These are high-volume containers designed strictly for light waste.

  • Best for: Larger clearouts, bulky light materials, commercial waste
  • Typical load: 100–120 bin bags
  • When not to choose: Heavy waste as the primary load
  • Nearest alternatives: Mixed/heavy → 8- or 6-yard
  • Strict Rule: No soil, bricks, or concrete. These materials are too dense for skips of this size.
20 YARD SKIP
40 YARD SKIP

20 and 40 Yard RoRo Skip – For Builders & Businesses

Roll-on roll-off containers for serious volume.

  • Best for: Construction, demolition, large commercial streams
  • Typical load: 200 bin bags (20-yd), 400 bin bags (40-yd)
  • Booking: These skips are hire-on-request. We’ll quote based on haulage, tonnage and required collection frequency.

Do I need a permit for a skip?

If the skip is entirely on private land (your driveway or garden), no permit is required.

However, if you are placing a skip on a public highway in Medway (Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham, or Strood), a permit is legally required.

We can arrange the permit for you. Most permits last 7–14 days and cost around £55–£110. Councils usually need 3–5 working days’ notice. Learn more about skip permit.

Which Skip Size Do I Need?

Recommendation: A 4 Yard Midi Skip is usually perfect for a standard bathroom suite (bath, toilet, sink) plus tiles and packaging.

Recommendation: You must use a 6 Yard Skip. Do not order anything larger (8-yard+), as the truck cannot legally lift larger skips filled with heavy rubble.

Recommendation: Go for a 12 Yard Skip. House clearances produce a lot of “light bulk” (boxes, clothes, furniture) that takes up volume quickly.

Recommendation: An 8 Yard Skip is best. Furniture shapes are awkward and create empty spaces, so you need the extra volume.

Common Questions About Skip Hire

Our FAQ section covers everything you need to know, from permit requirements to skip sizes and waste types.

No, heavy waste such as soil, bricks, and rubble should not go in 10-yard skips. These materials are best placed in 4 yard skip and 6 yard skips to avoid overloading. Larger skips are better suited for lighter bulky waste.

Our smallest 4-yard skip is the most cost-effective option for small clearances, garden waste, or DIY projects, holds 30–40 bin bags.

For a small flat or 1–2 rooms, a 4–6 yard skip is normally enough. For a full house clearance or larger renovation, an 8–12 yard skip is more suitable.

Yes, most furniture can go in a skip, including sofas, wardrobes, and chairs. However, electrical items such as fridges or hazardous materials must be handled separately.

Yes, but there is a supplementary fee for mattresses (approx. £20-£40 per item) because they require specialist recycling. You must place it at the top of the load.

The main difference is the capacity for bulky items. An 8-yard skip holds roughly 20 more bin bags than a 6-yard.

However, if you are disposing of heavy soil or hardcore, you are often limited to a 6-yard skip to stay within legal weight limits for the truck.
