How Long Can You Actually Keep That Skip?

The standard skip hire period varies based on your needs, but at Skip Hire Team, we offer flexible durations ranging from 7 to 28 days. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect:

  • 7 Days: A week is plenty for clearing out the garage, tackling the garden or short-term projects. If you don’t request collection by the end of your hire, additional charges may apply, or the skip may be collected automatically.
  • 14 Days: Two weeks suit most home improvements and medium-sized jobs. After this, a 10% weekly charge of the hire cost may be added for extended use.
  • 28 Days: Four weeks’ work for bigger renovations and commercial work. Beyond 28 days, daily rental fees may apply — typically £1.50/day for standard skips and £3.50/day for roll-on roll-offs.
  • Need More Time? We’re flexible — simply let us know in advance and we’ll help arrange an extended hire period.

Factors That Influence Skip Hire Duration

Several factors affect how long you can keep a skip:

  • Hire Policy: We offer flexible terms to suit your project size and schedule.
  • Permit Requirements: If your skip is placed on a public road, local council permits are required and usually valid for 7–14 days. Learn about permits here.
  • Waste Type: Some waste types (e.g., hazardous or restricted materials) require faster disposal or separate arrangements.
  • Skip Size: Bigger skips sometimes need collecting sooner, especially in tight spots. Health and safety and all that.

What Happens If You Exceed the Hire Period?

Going over your agreed hire period can result in:

  • Extra Charges: You’ll pay extra – about £20-30 per day depending on size. Had one customer forget to call us for collection before heading on holiday… expensive mistake.
  • Unannounced Collection: If we don’t hear from you by the end of the hire, we may arrange collection automatically to avoid permit or space violations.
  • Damage Responsibility: The skip remains your responsibility – if someone damages it or fills it with random rubbish, that’s on you.

Skip Permits for Roadside Placement

Putting your skip on the street? You’ll need a permit.
The council wants their paperwork and fees (of course, they do). Permits usually last 3 to 5 days.

Don’t stress though – we sort all that out. Just let us know where you want it, and we’ll handle the rest.

Your Responsibilities During the Hire

While your skip is on-site, it’s important to:

  • Keep it accessible: We can’t collect if it’s blocked in by cars or building materials.
  • Don’t overfill it: Nothing above the rim, please. Had to leave a skip in Gravesend last week because it was piled high with fence panels. The driver couldn’t legally take it.
  • Watch what goes in: No fridges, no batteries, no electronics, no paint. Old Jim tried hiding asbestos in a skip last year… cost him a fortune in fines.

Choosing the Right Skip Size

Choosing the correct size helps avoid overfilling and saves you time and money. Here’s a simple guide:

  • 4 yard skip size is your go-to for small jobs. Perfect if you’re just chucking out some old furniture or doing a bit of landscaping. But ripping out trees or doing a massive garage clear-out? You’ll want to step up.
  • 6yard skip – now we’re talking home renovation territory. Bathroom or kitchen rip-out? This’ll handle it. Fits a complete bathroom suite, all the packaging, and still has room for those inevitable extra bits you’ll find during the job.
  • 8 foot skip gets serious. Bigger building work, extensions, major home improvements. Takes a surprising amount of rubble. If you’re doing structural work, this is your skip.
  • 10 yard skip size is great for loft conversions, big garage clearances, or when you’ve got more waste than the 8-yarder can handle but don’t need a massive commercial skip.
  • 12 yard skips – this is for when things get real. Major home renovations, big extensions, complete house clearances. It’ll swallow pretty much anything you throw at it. Builders love this size for medium-sized projects.
  • And then we’ve got the monsters – Roll on roll off skip. These aren’t for your average home job. Demolition sites, major construction projects, commercial clearances.
